Cragun and Kessler describe how the movement founded by a Jewish peasant preacher and based in and on love became the religion of the rich and powerful, the religion of judgment and damnation, division and destruction. Volume I: The Gathering Storm is about the origins of a great divide that began in 100 - 430 CE, between Jesus of Nazareth's teachings and present Christianity. Cragun and Kessler outline how the so-called "Fathers of the Church" took over the community of Jesus, destroyed its foundations, and built their own church edifice, which has been transmitted to us - the church of philosophers and the Roman Empire.

With compassion and humor, Mara Hart has written a poignant about her parents' first twelve years of marriage.  "From 1927 to 1939 my parents, George and Lucy Kirk, owned the Chelsea Bookshop at 58 West 8th Street in Greenwich Village. What could be more romantic? They dreamed of a carefree, Bohemian life, with only the bookshop and each other to care for. But the realities of life interfered." "Even now, as I write this many decades later, sometimes I feel like an intruder, as if I was partially responsible for the death of this dream. Without children, could they have kept their beloved bookshop? Could they have stayed in the Village? Would they have been happier?"
